The Student Government Association at Hawaiʻi Pacific University hosted “Networking 101” on March 2, an event designed to help students build personal and professional relationships. The session featured alumni Naomi Hazelton and Joy Barua, who shared their experiences and advice on effective networking.
The event aimed to give students practical skills for career development by connecting them with successful graduates. Attendees were encouraged to step out of their comfort zones through interactive activities and direct feedback from the speakers.
Hazelton, who earned a master’s degree in corporate communications from HPU, discussed her journey in Hawaiʻi’s media industry. She co-founded Pacific Edge Magazine and later launched Element Media, serving as publisher, founder, and CEO. Her achievements include being named to Pacific Business News’ “40 Under 40” list. Hazelton also leads Pacific Edge Media Group and founded the Aloha Gentlemen’s Collective.
During her session, Hazelton used an energetic exercise where students jumped up while repeating “I’m excited!” She emphasized the importance of eye contact and a strong handshake in networking situations. “It works,” she said with a smile. “Every single time.”
Barua, president of Finance Insurance Ltd., brought over two decades of executive experience across various sectors. He is recognized as an Architect of Change and has taught at HPU’s College of Business since 2002. Barua led his group through conversations about career interests while sharing a handout with ten tips for effective networking. When asked about handling rejection, he said: “Rejection is just a warmup for future success, and it can be seen in a number of ways.”
Student Delaney Ngyuen reflected on the value of the event: “Both guests demonstrated their skills they learned from attending HPU and from real world experience! We were grateful to have their expertise present at Networking 101.”
The university plans similar events that connect current students with accomplished alumni to support student growth.
