Cost of college went up for all students at Kapiolani Community College

In-state tuition and fees rose 1.9 percent for 2018-19 at Kapiolani Community College, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Hawaii residents paid $3,144 to attend the two-year public institution this year – $60 more than the $3,084 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 163.4 percent more than residents this year, or $8,280. Their price tag grew 0.7 percent from $8,220 in 2017-18.

About 83 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Hawaii residents. About 4 percent are residents of other states and 13 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 59 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 388 students received grants or scholarships totaling $1.7 million and 68 students took out student loans totaling more than $327,206.

Including all undergraduates (6,899), 1,966 students used grants or scholarships totaling $8.3 million, and 583 students took out $3.3 million in federal student loans.
