Cost of college went up for all students at the University of Hawaii-West Oahu

In-state tuition and fees rose 1 percent for 2018-19 at the University of Hawaii-West Oahu, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Hawaii residents paid $7,512 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $72 more than the $7,440 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 172.5 percent more than residents this year, or $20,472. Their price tag grew 0.4 percent from $20,400 in 2017-18.

About 97 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Hawaii residents. About 2 percent are residents of other states and 1 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 74 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 161 students received grants or scholarships totaling $941,885 and 71 students took out student loans totaling more than $323,685.

Including all undergraduates (3,128), 1,435 students used grants or scholarships totaling $8 million, and 907 students took out $6.5 million in federal student loans.
