City and County of Honolulu Complete Streets - High-priority Missing Walkways Identified in the New Oʻahu Pedestrian Plan

The City's Department of Transportation Services is excited to announce its recent joint application with the Oʻahu Metropolitan Planning Organization (Oʻahu MPO) to the US Department of Transportation's Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant program for $6.25 million to address high-priority missing walkways identified in the new Oʻahu Pedestrian Plan.

Currently, only 57% of streets on Oʻahu have a walkway on both sides. Completing all missing walkways on City roadways would cost billions of dollars; the Oʻahu Pedestrian Plan prioritizes $101 million in Tier 1 walkway improvements along high-traffic streets and in school zones. These investments are critical for making our streets more accessible, preventing cars from obstructing pedestrian rights-of-way, and dignifying pedestrian travel. Corridors such as Plantation Road in central Waiʻanae (pictured above) is planned to be among the first round of projects implemented, providing connections between schools and parks, multi-family housing, commercial destinations, and transit.
