Powering Up the Holidays
Are your holiday light decorations safely installed? Christmas lights have power specifications on a tag near the female plug. Don’t string too many together exceeding your outlet’s capabilities. Before you decorate, here are tips to follow:
- Read the instructions included with your lights. Some may have a maximum number of strings you can put together.
- Never exceed the amps of the line your outlet can handle by checking your electric breaker box and the label on your lights.
- If you are using outdoor lights, connect the lights to a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet.
- Do not secure the wiring of lights with staples or nails, or place on hooks or nails.
- If you are using lights on a live tree, the tree should be well maintained and fresh. Do not place on brown or dried out trees. Check the water level of the tree holder daily.
