HONOLULU – The Department of Design and Construction (DDC) of the City and County of Honolulu has announced the successful completion of emergency repairs to the Kakaʻako sinkhole.

The sinkhole was first reported in October 2022 and was quickly determined to be an immediate safety risk to the public necessitating the closure of Cooke St. from Halekauwila St. to Ilaniwai St. Repair work for the sinkhole started in January and was completed in April 2023, a month ahead of schedule.

Now that the sinkhole is repaired, DDC’s Kakaʻako repaving project along Cooke St. can now resume providing a newly paved road surface for business’ and residents in the area. This road resurfacing project is expected to begin sometime in June 2023.

The City expresses its gratitude to the community and small businesses for their patience during the emergency repair work.
