HONOLULU – Mayor Rick Blangiardi today announced that the Department of Community Services (DCS) WorkHawaii Division will be hosting a graduation ceremony honoring 24 youth participants who have successfully completed their General Educational Development tests (GED). There ceremony will be held on Friday, June 30, 2023 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Leeward Community College theatre.

“I applaud these young men and women for taking this important, foundational step towards a better life,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “They come from all different backgrounds, various walks of life, and each have their own hardships to overcome. Yet they have all made the decision to create a better, brighter future for themselves, and I could not be more proud. I wish them all the best, and look forward to their future accomplishments.”

The WorkHawaii Youth program is designed to assist young adults from ages 16-24 to achieve their educational and employment goals. If eligible, each participant will work with a case manager to create a plan for a successful future. All participants must meet the eligibility requirements, including one or more of the following: high school dropout, offender, child of an incarcerated parent, individual with a disability, foster child, low-income, homeless or runaway, pregnant or parenting.

"It takes extraordinary strength, dedication, and courage to fundamentally change the trajectory of one's life," said DCS Director Anton Krucky. "WorkHawaii's Youth Program offers the tools young men and women can use to achieve a GED, but only the determination and discipline of the students themselves can bring them to their graduation ceremony. It is a monumental accomplishment, and we could not be more proud to support them as they begin the next phase of their lives."

The General Educational Development Test consists of four subject tests that, once passed, earn a high school equivalency credential. The four subjects are language arts, math, social studies, and science.
