FOIA Request to University of Hawaii-West Oahu Regarding Chinese National Students on June 4, 2025.
As part of our commitment to transparency and accountability in governmental affairs, we at the Honolulu Reporter have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the University of Hawaii-West Oahu. This request seeks comprehensive records concerning current students who are Chinese Nationals enrolled at the university.
The request specifically asks for documents or lists detailing all current Chinese National students and their respective departments. In cases where student names are protected, we have requested that the information be redacted or aggregated into totals by department. Additionally, we seek details about scholarships received by these students, including amounts and sources, particularly those affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council.
Furthermore, our inquiry extends to understanding the university's policies and procedures for monitoring students, including Chinese Nationals, to safeguard intellectual property and confidential information.
This request is made on behalf of both our publication and The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy. As members of the media dedicated to informing the public and holding institutions accountable, access to such records is crucial for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. We believe this qualifies us for a fee waiver as media professionals.
